BhutanOften
associated with 'Shangri-La', the mysterious mythical hidden Himalayan
Kingdom, Bhutan is uneasily wedged between Tibet and India. The country
is about the size of Switzerland with a population of less than a million
people. It is a Buddhist kingdom, with a monarchy ruled by King Jigme
Singye Wangchuk and the leader of the spiritual order, the Je Kenpo.
The
Bhutanese are a proud and independent people, expending substantial
effort in preserving their cultural identity. In the recent past
this has led to problems between the people in the south, who are
largely Nepali in origin, and the people in the north who are predominantly
Bhutanese. For example, the government expelled people to Nepal
who could not prove that they had been living in Bhutan for more
than a generation, which of course caused much tension. Tourism in Bhutan is limited to some several thousand visitors a year. The easiest way to go is by joining a group tour. It is rather expensive, expect to pay U$ 200,- per day, to travel to Bhutan. I was fortunate to be able to go there as a tour-guide a few years ago. I found a very pretty country well preserved from the modern ugliness of concrete structures and high rise buildings. The people were very friendly and courteous. I hope I'll find the time to go back there and do some of the fascinating trekking available in the north. |
